24 miles. Three peaks. Almost 12 hours. And some very questionable Yorkshire weather.
On Sunday 27 September, Team GTMaritime took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise vital funds for maritime charity Sailors’ Society.
The challenge covers around 24 miles (39km) across Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, with more than 1,600 metres of climbing along the way. We knew it was going to be a tough day. What we hadn’t quite accounted for were 55km/h winds, sideways rain and low visibility adding an extra dimension to the challenge.
Over almost 12 hours, the team clocked up around 60,000 steps each, battled the elements and even had a cycling event to contend with on the way up the second climb.
But, with plenty of determination and encouragement along the way, we did it!
Supporting the people who keep our industry moving
Taking on the challenge was about much more than reaching the three summits.
Sailors’ Society has been supporting seafarers and their families for more than 200 years, providing practical and emotional support, crisis response and vital funds to those who need it.
Working in the maritime industry means we see the essential role seafarers play in keeping global trade moving. Supporting an organisation dedicated to being there for them and their families made every difficult mile worthwhile.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who sponsored and supported the team, together with a final donation from GTMaritime, we’re delighted to have raised £1,500 for Sailors’ Society.
There were certainly some sore legs the following day, but also a huge sense of accomplishment.
A massive thank you to everyone who donated, shared our fundraising page or sent us words of encouragement. Your support helped keep us moving through the wind and rain and, most importantly, will help Sailors’ Society continue its vital work supporting seafarers and their families around the world.
Thank you from all of Team GTMaritime.
