That caution is understandable. Shipping is not an industry where technology can be adopted simply because it is new. Systems need to be reliable, safe and appropriate for the way vessels actually operate. If a technology creates more risk, more confusion or more work, it will not be useful for long.
That is why the most valuable use of AI in maritime is not about replacing people. It is about reducing the burden on people who are already being asked to manage more complexity than ever before.
Managing a growing volume of information
Across the industry, the volume of information moving between ship and shore has increased significantly. Vessels are generating more data, receiving more instructions, exchanging more documents and relying on more digital systems. At the same time, the teams responsible for managing this environment are not necessarily getting bigger.
This is where AI has a practical role to play.
One of the clearest examples is email. Despite the growth of specialist maritime platforms, email remains one of the main channels through which operational context is shared. Port call information, chartering instructions, maintenance updates, compliance documents and technical queries all continue to move through inboxes.
For some vessels, that can mean very high email volumes. The problem is not just the number of messages, but the effort required to work out what matters, what requires action and what can be dealt with later.
AI can help by categorising messages, identifying whether an email requires action and summarising key information so users can make faster decisions. That does not remove responsibility from the person reading the email. It gives them a clearer starting point.

Keeping people in control
This distinction matters.
There is a difference between AI making decisions on behalf of operators and AI helping operators make better decisions more efficiently.
In maritime, that human-in-the-loop model is essential. AI can highlight issues, suggest actions and reduce repetitive work, but accountability still needs to sit with the person or team responsible for the operation.
The same principle applies to IT asset management.
As vessels become more connected, IT teams are expected to maintain visibility of onboard systems, identify vulnerabilities and manage updates across distributed fleets. That is a growing workload, particularly for smaller teams. It is not unusual for a company’s entire IT function to consist of only a few people, even while the fleet environment becomes more complex.
AI-supported tools can help by identifying issues, prioritising actions and proposing ways to resolve common problems. For example, if an endpoint is running low on disk space or requires a software update, an AI-assisted system could flag the issue and suggest a remediation path.
The important point is that the system should support the administrator, not bypass them.
This is where much of the debate around AI becomes too simplistic. The question is not whether AI should be trusted to run maritime operations by itself. It should not.
The more useful question is how AI can help skilled people spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time on the decisions that require judgement.
AI, cybersecurity and trust
That is particularly important as cybersecurity risk continues to grow.
The same AI capabilities that can improve productivity can also be used by attackers to increase the scale and sophistication of threats. Phishing, social engineering and automated probing of systems are all likely to become more difficult to detect as AI tools improve.
This makes control and verification more important, not less.
AI can support resilience, but only when it is implemented within clear processes, with appropriate oversight and a strong understanding of where responsibility sits.
For maritime operators, the starting point should be practical. AI should be applied where it can reduce workload, improve visibility or help teams respond more effectively to real operational issues. It should not be adopted simply to follow a trend.
Technology that supports the people using it
The industry does not need AI for its own sake. It needs technology that helps vessels and shore teams operate more safely, efficiently and reliably.
Used well, AI can support that. It can reduce noise, improve prioritisation and help constrained teams manage increasingly complex environments. But its value will depend on whether it is built around the realities of maritime operations.
In shipping, the best use of AI will not be replacing the people who understand the vessel.
It will be helping them focus on what matters most.
